Personal Information:
I'm Josh - a qualified secondary school History teacher with a PhD in History from the University of Exeter, an MA from Yale University, and a BSc from the London School of Economics.

I spent two years teaching History in a British secondary school, where I developed a strong grounding in how students actually learn and where they tend to lose marks - invaluable experience I now bring directly into how I tutor. Alongside teaching, I've also taught and helped administer undergraduate History modules at the University of Exeter, giving me experience across the full range from GCSE through to degree level.

For GCSE and A-Level students, we focus on essay structure, source analysis and detailed feedback mapped directly to the mark scheme - the specific skills examiners are rewarding. I keep close track of exam board requirements (particularly OCR from my time as a secondary school teacher) and use real past papers and examiner reports to make sure students understand exactly what separates a strong answer from an average one. Every session includes clear, written feedback so progress is easy to track.

For undergraduate students, sessions focus on developing more sophisticated argument, historiography, and independent research and writing skills, drawing on my own experience teaching and helping administer undergraduate History modules at the University of Exeter.

I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate and full professional indemnity insurance, and work flexibly around school schedules and family commitments. I'm based in Exeter, Devon, and enjoy working with students locally as well as online across the UK.

Outside of teaching, my own historical interests keep me engaged with new research and ideas - something I bring into sessions to help make History feel like a living, engaging subject rather than just exam content to memorise.
