Overview Of The Biology Syllabus

Primary and KS3 Biology are taught as part of the Science syllabus within the national curriculum

Biology at GCSE can be studied as an individual GCSE or part of GCSE Science. Biology can be divided into several components. Physiology includes the nervous system, hormones, homeostasis i.e. the skin and glucose regulation, exercise and diet the breathing system, the kidneys, digestion and the heart and blood. This involves understanding the basic mechanisms and anatomy relating to the human body. It also requires the student to grasp basic functions of organ systems. Disease covers medicines and immunity and industrial biology. The student is introduced to how the human body protects itself from disease and how the immune system is able to help in fighting infection and disease. This is tied in with the introduction to the industrial aspect and it's role in the production of genetically engineered drugs. The Biochemistry component covers cells, enzymes and cell respiration. Basic principles of the functions of cell organelles as well as their role in aerobi and anaerobic respiration are discussed. Ecology, evolution, genetics, plants and inheritance are further topics covered at GCSE Biology. GCSE Human Biology, whilst very similar to GCSE concentrates on human health and disease and physiology as oppose to study of plants, excluding such topics as photosynthesis and transpiration.

AS Level Biology and Human Biology is an more detailed study of GCSE topics. Major areas covered throughout this two year course are divided into the several major areas. This includes the study of plants which incorporates the physiology of plant structure and how plants are adapted to withstand varying fluctuations of environmental pressure. Photosynthesis is another topic covered in great detail. Microbes and Disease, Immunology, and Population Biology covers the effects of disease on the human body. This is followed by the role of immunology in disease and and how disease effects population. Cell biology, Physiology and Excersise Physiology, are an extended more detailed study of the role and functions of the major organ systems in the the human body compared to that studied at GCSE. Other major topics of the A-Level specification, require the study of Genetics, Evolution and Speciation, Applied Ecology and Behaviour. As for GCSE AS and A Level Biology are similar in content but omit the plant biology component of the course. Common A-Level Biology courses are assessed by OCR and AQA

Students who often study Biology choose careers allied to medicine, medical research and Pharmacy. Career options though are broad and the student can go onto study various courses such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optomology and nursing. However many students who study Biology also choose alternative career paths such as teaching or social work.
