Science is studied at these levels in the curriculum, and like most other subjects is studied at a basic level.
It is a compulsory national curriculum subject that is studied by all school children and is introduced at primary level.
GCSE Science can be divided into two distinct syllabi.Double award science or dual award, signifies that a student can obtain two GCSE qualifications. This appears to be very common throughout schools, although some allow specialist study of Physics, Chemistry and Biology so the student can obtain three separate GCSEs as oppose to two, very much like the old C.S.E. and O'level system. As mentioned Science is divided into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some of the following Physics topics are covered at GCSE ; Energy, Electromagnetism, Forces, Waves & Radiation. Chemistry topics studied at GCSE include Periodicity and the Periodic Table, Chemical Reactions & Structure & Bonding. An emphasis of the topics covered for Chemsitry includes an introduction and overview of the Periodic Table. Students are expected to know trends down various groups of the Periodic Table as well as various stoiochemetric equations. It is imperative for any student who expects to achieve a high grade at GCSE that they are able to know the valencies (commonly known as charges) for ions. The student can then write basic chemical formulae from these which can lead to successful balancing of chemical equations. In addition to this, an understanding of basic chemical calulations such as the calucation of moles and calucations of relative molecular masses is required, especially if the student wishes to study Chemistry at A-Level. The final aspect of GCSE is Biology divided into physiology ( i.e. breathing and digestion etc). This involves understanding basic physiology of the human biology for the major organs. Plant biology, disease, Environmental Science and Genetics and Inheritance are other topics covered. As with the majority of GCSE courses, practical assessments are an important aspect. Students are often assessed by undertaking several Science practicals involving the study of the aforementioned topics. The grades for these practicals are then used in conjunction with the Science examinations to determine the final grade for the student.
When a student completes GCSE and decides to specialise at AS and A level, the student has the option of choosing A levels in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. This can then be followed in undergraduate and postgraduate study of courses allied and specialising in theae subject areas . These can include such specialisms as Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biomedical Science, Medicine and Opthamology.
