GCSE Human Physiology and Health is a prerequisite course for the study of A-Level Human Biology. Very similar to the Biology aspect GCSE Co-ordinated Science and GCSE Biology, it concentrates of human body. There are several major key areas involved in the study of Human Physiology and Health which can be dealt with in turn.
This topic covers food chains, food webs and pyramids of energy
The student must gain an understanding of topics including personal cleanliness, excersise, balanced diet, dental care, the effect of drugs and smoking on the human body, congenital and inherited disease, food preservation and how clean water is produced .
Includes how population increases and decline are governed by nutrition, disease, both control, health education and pollutants
Cells, tissues, organ systems, skin, enzymes , anaerobic and aerobic respiration
Basic Biochemistry relating to the major molecules involved in human biology including lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins
Understanding of the location, functions and interactions of the major organ systems including the alimentary canal, the blood and circulatory system, immunity, breathing and gas exchange, excretion, nervous system, hormones and homeostasis.
Naming and understanding the role of the skeleton and the muscular system
Includes the study of the reproductive system, hormonal control, gametes, fertilisation & pregnancy, birth, lactation, growth and development. The second aspect of this topic deals with the basics of cell division including uncontrolled cell division and cancer and also the role and function of chromosomes as well as variation and genetic engineering
Being private tutors specialising in Biology & Chemistry as well many years of tutoring & lecturing experience in biology, we find that most students who choose A-Level Human Biology, tend to do so because they enjoy it more to learning about plants. I studied Human Biology myself, many moons ago for this reason! Whilst the Human Biology has some what changed since then the key fundamentals are still present these include:
Cell Biology including microscopy, movement in and out of cells, biological molecules, enzymes, tissues, blood, lungs and heart
This module concentrates on disease including bacteria, viruses, immunology, cell cycle, DNA and protein synthesis, gene technology, heart disease, cancer, and drugs in their role in disease.
This area specifically concentrates on genetics and ecology including photosynthesis, respiration and the carbon and nitrogen cycles
The key focus in this module deals with human reproduction including gametes, fertilisation, implantation, fetus, maternal physiology and puberty as well as the Physiology aspect. The main areas of physiology covered are the digestive system, the nervous system , the muscles homeostasis and, senescence and diet.
Students who wish to specialise in Human Biology at degree level do not specifically have to choose a degree in human biology. There are many undergraduate degrees with many overlapping elements of Human Biology. These include Life Sciences, where a degree level may wish to specialise in Anatomy and Physiology, Astrobiology, Biodiversity, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Botany, Forensics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, Zoology. Alternatively an undergraduate student may wish to opt for the Health Sciences Route including Audiology, Bioengineering, Complementary medicine, Alternative medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Health services management, Medical teaching, Nutrition, Occupational hygiene, Occupational therapy, Ophthalmics, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Radiology or Speech therapy .
