Personal Information:
I have a first class degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University, a teaching qualification (PGCE) from Leeds University focused on secondary Mathematics and a PhD from Goldsmiths in Education that analysed gender differences in participation in A Level Mathematics. I also have an Enhanced DBS Certificate.
I worked as a teacher for the first seven years of my working life from 1992 to 1999 at secondary and post-16 levels. I also taught Mathematics part-time while studying for my doctorate and have privately 16 students in the years since then covering Key Stage 2 to A level Further Mathematics.
After completing my PhD I was employed in higher education where I taught sociology and education, most recently spending four years at Brunel University. While working in universities, I taught both beginning and experienced maths teachers and wrote about mathematics teaching including in books for trainee teachers such as Routledge's 'Debates in Mathematics Education'.
Eleven years ago, I decided to go freelance. Since then, I've mostly done research work but I've also done some admin work for projects I care about and some teaching including privately tutoring mathematics. I enjoy supporting people to learn maths and seeing their skills and confidence in the subject grow. I've also found that I learn a lot from working with individual students as I adapt how I teach to the needs of each new learner.
I only teach in person, not online. because that reflects my experience, and is what I feel is most effective for maths learning.
