Although this is general overview and applies to all major syllabi there is an overlap of the key topics covered at GCSE, AS & A-Level Sociology. The courses cover a wide range of topics effecting society in general. This enables the student to gain a firm grasp of the key fundamentals should they wish to go onto study Sociology at degree level. Both GCSE and A-Level deals with defining the role and importance of the family unit and how this has changed over time. It also introduces the student to epidemiology and looks at the effect of health and disease on society as a whole, dealing with how this can be prevented and controlled. A2 Level discusses at length Sociology within the workplace and covers such topics as hierarchical effects on individuals. At both GCSE Sociology and A-Level, crime is a key topic that is discussed. The role, effect and prevention of crime, is a topic that the student will be assessed on in both GCSE and A-Level examinations. Other subtopics include introduction to social policy and how this effects poverty, education and it's importance.
Because Sociology touches on epidemiology the student must have a good grasp of statistics. Afterall demographic and epidemiological data is often collected from large sample sizes. Therefore the student should be able to identify the research methods of how this data needs to be collected and interpreted.
Subjects such as Biology and Psychology can complement the study of Sociology as certain aspects of Biology and Psychology are touched upon at both GCSE and A-Level. Often students who go onto specialise in Sociology at university, may choose to study Social Science and Social Policy . Career options available to Social Science graduates can include teaching, research and social work.
