Media Studies Tutors Syllabus Overview

GCSE Media Studies is assessed on four key concepts which are media forms and language, audience, instituitions and representation. GCSE involves the study of the following areas

• T.V.

This topic involves looking at such topics as audiences, audience debating, broadcasting organisations, new technology, cable, satellite t.v. and representative bodies such as the BBC, ITC and BSC. Genres of television are also covered where production skills, common stereotypes and soap operas are studied

• Film

This area covers film language, film sequences, film advertising, film audiences, types of viewing of films such as video, DVD, cinema, Internet including production an development of films and how the film genre is adapted

• Radio

Includes topic areas such as pace, title music, radio presentation styles, scripts, radio advertising and regulatory bodies.

• Music

Includes differing forms and music genres including rap, rock, dance, techno and indie music. A presentation of music images in the form of CD, vinyl, posters and teen magazines. Also website promotion, appeals of different pop bands and pop stars including publication and pop star images.

• Newspapers, Magazines & Comics

Including ownership, presentation, headline orientation, circulation, editorial content, circulating and advertising, relationship and content.

AS Level involves study of types of media such as video, audio and Internet forms, the key concepts involved in TV dramas well as textual analysis and representation including camera shots, angle movements etc. Media industries are also covered including film, music, newspapers, radio, magazines and video games. Radio Drama is analysed including textual analysis and representation in the forms of speech, music, sound effects and editing.

A2 Level looks at the critical perspectives in media including theoretical evaluation of a production as well as contemporary issues and an advances portfolio in media is studied with video, print, web media, audio and areas of software.

Students undertaking a degree in drama can specialise in several fields including Media Production, Communication Studies, Political Communication, Technical Communication, Music Management, Cinematics, Publishing, Publishing Studies, Creative Writing and Journalism.
