My qualifications include BSc(Hons), Associateship of King's College and a PGCE. I have experience of covering all exam boards and have successfully tutored for 15 years.
My teaching roles in a local school include the former Head of Science and Head of Chemistry, where I have taught up to 'A' level. I am also the author of "BBC Help Yourself GCSE Chemistry" & contributor to Nuffield KS3 Science.
The advantage of personal tuition is that the teacher can concentrate on aspects of the subject that the student wants or needs. One of the most useful activities is for the student to work through exam questions in my presence. This enables me to offer further explanation about the subject, in the context of exam questions, rather than just cold lecturing or note taking; ultimately it is exam questions which the student will have to answer. I can also ensure that the student writes only correct answers, thus avoiding habitual mistakes and misunderstandings. As an example, at first it might take up to about 3 hours to go through a 1 hour exam paper in this way.
Depending on the time available, after one or two sets of past exam papers have been answered under my guidance, the student can work through exam questions in their own time, using tutorials to ask me for help on only the questions with which they have had difficulty. The more work students can do on their own, the better, especially at A’ level. However, at GCSE, even pupils who have great difficulty working on their own, benefit greatly from my approach of working through past papers in my presence. I am patient, and accustomed to teaching students of all abilities, including some with special needs.
In spite of my tutorials necessarily being very exam centred, they are certainly not cramming sessions. In fact, most students find them interesting, fun and enjoyable, especially as they begin to understand the subject more clearly and work out the correct answers for themselves.
If the student is under the age of 18, then I expect a parent or other suitable adult to be present in the home during the tutorial.
