Overview Of The Art and Design Syllabus

Art, Craft and Design is incorporated into the national Curriculum at KS1, KS2 and KS3.

KS4 or GCSE Art and Design covers several speciality areas. The main areas are divided into Fine Art, Graphic Design, Textiles and Photography. The are the different types of areas of a student may specialise in at GCSE. At AS and A Level the student will again specialise but study a more details aspect of the course. The study of Fine Art. This consists of painting and drawing, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking and film and video covering topics such as animation and photography.

Graphic Design involves the study of such areas as digital imagery, film and television art, animation, computer aided design, art involved in advertising and packaging, illustration and computer graphics.

Textiles covers printing and dying of materials, fashion, costume design, three dimensional design, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery. Also the areas of design for theatre and television , architectural design and environmental design are investigated.

Photography is another specialist area of Art and Design. The student will study portrait photography, landscape photography, still life photography and documentary photography.

Specialisation in Art and Design for degree and post graduate level can cover a vast area which may include some such topic areas as History Of Art, Abstract Art, Architecture, Art &Design as well as Graphic Design. Art courses and classes can be studied for recreational purposes also such as drawing and painting. The student may wish to specialise in landscape drawing, still as life drawing, water colour or oil painting. Other common classes often offered by art tutors can involve sculpture or pottery or textiles and sewing.
