Currently Archaeology is offered by only some exam boards at AS/A Level i.e AQA and OCR. It is not offered as a specialist subject at KS4 / GCSE. However it can be studied as a smaller topic within the Classical Civilisation or Ancient History syllabus at GCSE level. Therefore unlike GCSE, the student has the option to decide if he or she wishes to specialise in A Level Archaeology at an appropriate further education college or sixth form .
AS-Level Archaeology introduces the discovery of sites and landscapes and how these can be evacuated. Detailed study of how techniques and methods are used to evacuate the age of sites including the recording, analysing of material, dating of sites and interpretation and presentation of evidence. AS-Level also uses the knowledge of archaeological information to form a final conclusion from the evidence gathered from forms such as religion, art, symbolism and rituals.
A-Level Archaeology is split into the three major study areas. The first study area for A2-Level is the how social organisations and settlement knowledge is used including such factors as buildings, type of settlement, population types and numbers, warfare and social changes over time. The second main study area for A2-Level made by humans and how these artefacts were produced. The final study area for A2-Level investigates how economic factors are related to the study of archaeology such as availability of food, how communication and transport was achieved as well as trade and money.
Students undertaking the study of archeaology at undergraduate and post graduate level can specialise in several fields including some of the discipline areas listed below, such as Egyptology. Other subjects which compliment the study of Archaeology can include History, Latin, Classical Civilisation /Classics, Anthropology, Chemistry and Biology. Various career options are open to students who have studied Archaeology at degree and postgraduate level.
